Facebook Changes Feed To Promote Posts That Aren’t Fake, Sensational, Or Spam

Facebook is prioritizing “authentic” content in News Feed with a ranking algorithm change that detects and promotes content “that people consider genuine, and not misleading, sensational, or spammy.” It’s also giving a boost to stories that are going viral in real-time right now that could help it compete with Twitter for in-the-moment news sharing

To build the update, Facebook categorized Pages that frequently share inauthentic posts like fake news and clickbaity headlines, or get their posts hidden often. It then used these posts to train an algorithm that detects similar content as its shared in the News Feed. Facebook will now give extra feed visibility to posts that don’t show signs of similarity to inauthentic content.

Meanwhile, Facebook wants to more quickly surface big stories going viral either because the topic is being posted about by lots of people, or a Page post about the topic is seeing tons of engagement. Facebook will then take that as a signal that you might temporarily care more about the topic, and therefore show it in your News Feed while it’s still hot.

Facebook says it doesn’t anticipate significant changes to most Pages’ News Feed distribution, but some might see a small increase or decrease in referral traffic or outbound clicks depending on if they share authentic, timely content vs inauthentic and outdated stories.

This is the latest push in Facebook’s ongoing quest to remove fake news from the News Feed. Last month it announced a slew of feature updates including partnerships with third-party fact checkers to add warning labels to fake news stories. Its reputation was marred by allegations that fake news in its feed helped get Donald Trump elected.

Facebook risks people turning away from the News Feed or being hesistant to click stories they see if it can’t get a handle on fake news. Since the News Feed is both the primary driver of Facebook’s mission to connect people, and the source of much of its ad revenue, battling misinformation is critical to its public perception, even if the company says fake news makes up only a tiny fraction of what’s shared.

Comcast Launches Its Xfinity TV App Into Beta On Roku

Comcast’s Xfinity TV application launched into beta today on Roku, offering both live and on-demand programming, including local broadcast stations as well as public access and government channels. It also lets customers watch their cloud DVR recordings. But make no mistake: this isn’t really an app for cord cutters for the time being. To use the app, most Comcast customers will have to subscribe to both Xfinity TV and Xfinity’s internet service, the company’s FAQ explains.

With the beta app’s launch, Comcast says a set-top box is still required.

“Due to technical limitations” the app can currently only be used on secondary TV outlets, and customers will need to have at least one Comcast set-top box in their home, the site states. (The box doesn’t have to be connected to the same TV that Roku is, though.) Customers will also need to have a Xfinity IP gateway, which all Xfinity Internet customers do.

But there is one notable exception to this rule.

The company notes that Xfinity Stream, its newer live TV service available to internet customers, will also work with the beta app on Roku, provided customers have a compatible IP gateway – meaning, Comcast’s internet service. Unfortunately, Stream is not available in all Comcast markets – it’s only live in Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan and New Hampshire at present.

In addition, Comcast says when the service launches, it will charge a fee for Roku-connected devices. This fee will be waived during the beta trial, and the company has not yet determined what that fee will be in the future. If it treats Roku like TiVo, that would mean crediting back users’ accounts $2.50 towards the $9.95 per month set-top box fee, notes Variety. But this could change before the service exits beta.

The launch on Roku comes nine months after Comcast first announced its third-party partnership program – the company’s plan to expand access to its TV service to more hardware platforms. The program was touted as a way to watch Xfinity cable TV without needing to lease a set-top box from Comcast. Some Samsung smart TVs were among the first to gain access to Comcast’s TV service through the initiative.

But for most Xfinity customers, this Roku launch doesn’t (yet) mean you can ditch your set-top box. It seems like there are still some kinks to work out on that front.

As for the app itself, Xfinity’s TV content is presented in an immersive guide with rich graphics, personalized recommendations, and details on the TV shows and movies offered. You can switch between sections like TV, Movies, News, Kids, Life, Music, Latino, and more, as well as browse curated selections of Featured programs, and other round-ups.

Because it’s a beta, there could be some glitches. It will also lack some features that will be available later, like the ability to rent or buy programming or play back previously purchased programs.

Comcast says that the app is being offered so users can offer feedback and developers can add final tweaks ahead of the app’s official launch later this year.

Also, the TV app is initially available only on more current Roku models that have been released in the last couple of years. This includes: the Roku Express, Roku Express+, Roku Streaming Stick (model 3600), Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere+, Roku Ultra, Roku 4 (model 4400), Roku 3 (model 4230 and 4200), and Roku 2 (model 4210).

Apple Breaks iPhone Sales Record With 78.3 Million Units Sold In The Holiday Quarter

With another big holiday quarter behind it, Apple saw revenues from its flagship iPhone product rise to $54.4 billion, up from $51.6 billion a year earlier. That revenue growth came as Apple reported units sold rose 5 percent to 78.3 million in its fiscal first quarter of 2017.

That was a record for sales, and also beat analysts’ expectations by a couple of million. Wall Street forecast iPhone unit sales of 76.3 million in the holiday quarter.

The iPhone is still Apple’s biggest seller, but for the quarter it also saw a slight uptick in sales from its personal computing division, thanks to a long-awaited refresh of its MacBook Pro line.

In the company’s earnings release, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the company “sold more iPhones than ever before and set all-time revenue records for iPhone, Services, Mac and Apple Watch.”

For the quarter, Apple reported:
  • iPhone unit sales of 78.3 million, up 5 percent from the previous year. Revenue also rose 5 percent, to $54.4 billion.
  • The iPad continued to lag, with units sold declining 19 percent to 13.1 million and revenue declining 22 percent to $5.5 billion.
  • Mac unit sales of 5.4 billion, up 1 percent from a year ago. However, year-over-year revenue was up 7 percent to $7.2 billion.
  • Sales of “other” products, which include Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats products, iPod and Apple-branded and third-party accessories, declined 8 percent year-over-year to $4 billion for the quarter.

Apple Services Have A Huge Quarter As App Store Sees ‘Record Activity’

Apple just released its first quarterly earnings report of the new year, and the company was quick to share that it was a banner quarter for the company’s Services segment which topped $7.17 billion, growing 18 percent year-over-year from $6.05 billion in Q1 of 2016.

“Revenue from Services grew strongly over last year, led by record customer activity on the App Store, and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline,” CEO Tim Cook said in a press release from the company.

“Services,” which includes revenue from Apple’s digital content plays like iCloud, ApplePay, Apple Music, the App Store and other services like AppleCare has long been an increasingly critical market for the tech giant, especially as it sees some of its central hardware categories grow a bit long in the tooth.

In the earnings call following the quarterly release, Apple CEO Tim Cook detailed that he expected the company’s Services sector to double in the next four years, and that this year he expected revenues in the category to grow to the size of a Fortune 100 company.

He also detailed that the App Store saw around $3 billion in purchases in December alone, its largest month to date he said. Overall App Store sales saw a 43% year-over-year increase with an increase in both the number of accounts and the average revenue per account.

Last quarter, Services revenues popped above the company’s overall Mac sales but this quarter, holiday sales of the Mac grew to eclipse services yet again. This may be the last quarter we ever see this trend however as Services seem to blast off.

This growth all comes as Apple prepares to make the risky but potentially highly lucrative entrance into producing original digital content, though it will likely initially be bundled into the company’s Apple Music subscription.

Sheryl Sandberg Joins The Immigration Ban Statement Trend

Several tech leaders spoke out against President Trump’s executive order to ban immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries over the weekend. Sheryl Sandberg has now leaned into that now rather large group with a post on her Facebook wall.

In it, Sandberg talked about her great-great-grandmother arriving at Ellis Island in the late 1800s, fleeing religious persecution — a familiar ancestral story for many generations of Americans. But Sandberg then turned the focus on how this particular immigration ban would affect women.

“Something that hasn’t gotten enough attention is how this harsher immigration climate is particularly unforgiving for women,” the Lean In leader wrote. “Long before this week, women — especially undocumented women — have been vulnerable to violence and abuse once they get here.”

Sandberg has been excoriated recently for staying silent on the Women’s March — the biggest protest in U.S. history and one that seemed a no-brainer for anyone claiming to be a feminist to at least say something about.

We don’t know the exact reasons why Sandberg chose to stay out of that one, but the timing of this most recent post on immigration might seem odd. It took Sandberg more than a long weekend to add her position after several tech leaders already voiced their opposition. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg spoke up at the onset saying, “We need to keep this country safe, but we should do that by focusing on people who actually pose a threat.”

Is there a reason for Sandberg to move so cautiously? It could have something to do with the rumors that the Facebook exec is planning to run for office or even shopping around for a CEO position.

“The Executive Orders issued over the past week defy the heart and values that define the best of our
nation. Families have been separated. Frightened children have been detained in airports without their parents. People seeking refuge have been turned away and sent back to the danger they just managed to flee. This is not how it should be in America,” Sandberg wrote.

Sandberg is finally adding her own heart and values to this growing trend.

Google’s Bug Bounty Program Pays Out $3 Million

If you’re willing to hunt for flaws within its vast array of software and services, Google’s happy to pay up. Over the course of its 2016 Vulnerability Rewards Program, the company paid out $3 million—a third of the total $9 million that enthusiastic researchers have earned since the initiative, more colloquially known as a bug bounty program, launched in 2010.

The latest round of bug bounties yielded 1,000 individual rewards to 350 participants, with the largest single reward totaling $100,000. Last March, Google doubled the bounty for a Chromebook hack from $50,000 to $100,000, after no one managed to pull one off.

The big reason for the jump in reward numbers? Android. Last year was the first that Android had its own Vulnerability Reward Program, or VRP. As Google’s Security Blog explains:
“On the product side, we saw amazing contributions from Android researchers all over the world, less than a year after Android launched its VRP. We also expanded our overall VRP to include more products, including OnHub and Nest devices.
We increased our presence at events around the world, like pwn2own and Pwnfest. The vulnerabilities responsibly disclosed at these events enabled us to quickly provide fixes to the ecosystem and keep customers safe. At both events, we were able to close down a vulnerability in Chrome within days of being notified of the issue.”
Among 2016’s bug bounty exploits:
  • Google awarded $3,134 to researcher Tomasz Bojarski for an XSS vulnerability identified on its events site (events.google.com). Bojarsk has been hunts for Google exploits from a small town in Poland for the last three years and he claims to do it for the “sheer enjoyment.” Maybe also for the glory, because he’s killing it on Google’s bug bounty leaderboards.
  • A “bug chain bonus” of $5,000 and another $7,500 for a JavaScript exploit targeting the Google account recovery page.
  • A Chrome OS vulnerability involving a one byte DNS library overflow, detailed at the Project Zero blog. Sounds like someone finally cashed in on Google’s Chromebook call to action.
In a report on the annual bug bounty rewards, Google noted that participation from researchers in India is on the upswing. One regular VRP participant that the team met in India at Nullcon actually funds his own startup with his bounties.

Inspired to exploit greatness yet? If you’ve ever wanted to watch an pop-up alert dance along to an EDM drop, well, today is your lucky day. Through Google’s VRP, all this and more could be yours.
