When we discovered yesterday evening live from Las Vegas existence of GeForce Now for PC and Mac, our first thought was to Shadow, the famous service "PC in the cloud" which we have already spoken at length . GeForce Now allows access to any Steam, Origin or Uplay client, or 90% of the PC video game catalog, from any PC or Mac with a good Internet connection. Unlike Shield TV's GeForce Now, the cost of the subscription only covers access to the aforementioned services and under no circumstances allows you to launch games that you did not purchase previously. In short, like Shadow.
Two philosophies confront each other
There are however some differences in size: GeForce Now is exclusively dedicated to video games and does not allow the use of office tools, while Shadow offers a complete Windows 10 environment, accessible at will. The question of price is also interesting, since GeForce Now works by "playing time": $ 25 for 20 hours on a GeForce GTX 1060 and 10 hours on a GeForce GTX 1080 . On Shadow's side, the subscription goes from € 29.95 to € 44.95 per month, depending on the commitment made. Very clearly - and this was even said by Jen-Hsun Huang himself during the presentation - this GeForce Now service is mainly reserved for casual gamers, who do not want to invest hundreds or thousands of ' Euros in a machine, and for whom 20 hours of play already represent a big investment. The hardcore fan of Battlefield 1 or Dota 2 , which passes 5:00 every night in front of it, clearly have no financial incentive to subscribe to the offer. For now, GeForce Now for PC and Mac remains a service reserved to the American territory: the " early access " will begin in March and we suspect this will correspond to a phase of beta testing or longer. Because one must not forget one very important thing: the quality of the experience on cloud gaming depends very much on the type of connection used and, in this respect, the United States is far from having fiber optics everywhere. A life-size test is therefore essential.
