iBurst recently informed customers it had started the process of decommissioning its network to make way for super-fast LTE-A. The new network will replace the existing iBurst network as part of a move by Multisource – which acquired iBurst parent WBS in 2015 – to create a new LTE-A national network.
“The new LTE-A technology will initially be accessible to iBurst customers within available coverage areas. They will receive pre-launch rates through an LTE-A enrollment initiative, the deadline for which has been extended to 31 March 2017.”
iBurst previously stated that the “migration specials” included a 100GB-per-month LTE-A contract. Existing iBurst customers can register their no-obligation interest in LTE-A on iBurst’s website. WBS said the official launch date for the new LTE-A network remains “a closely-guarded secret”.
“As does the market strategy and new customer pricing. WBS intends to make announcements in this regard in due course,” it said.
The company stated that the first phase of the decommissioning has been planned to limit the impact on existing iBurst users and to ensure minimal disruption caused as LTE-A rolls out.
“To assist iBurst customers to understand the impact of phase one decommissioning, FAQs and enrollment steps are available online.”
“LTE-A coverage maps will be available towards the end of February 2017 and will be updated as coverage increases.” The company said it plans to announce product launch details soon.
WBS previously stated that its planned LTE-A network will consist of 10,000 towers across South Africa by 2020.
